Aunty Carol Lee Kamekona Announces Intent to Run For Maui County Council In Kahului District

Embodying progressive leadership, Carol Lee Kamekona, steps forward to lead Maui towards a sustainable recovery in the wake of the Lāhainā and Upcountry fires and amidst the ongoing housing crisis.

Kahului, Maui, HI – February 13, 2024 - With a deeply rooted commitment to the land and its people, Carol Lee Kamekona announced today her intent to run for Maui County Council in the Kahului district. Her campaign is a call to action for all kamaʻaina to unite in the spirit of resilience, recovery, and collective well-being so we can bring about urgent changes to the district and Maui County.

Kamekona, a staunch advocate for community-led recovery, healing, and sustainable development, is committed to addressing the immediate and long-term needs of our community from the devastating Lāhainā and Upcountry fires, including the critical nature of the ongoing housing crisis while building a Maui that our keiki can be proud of.

"In the face of adversity, Maui's spirit has remained unbroken. Our journey towards healing and rebuilding from the Lāhainā and Upcountry fires, as well as addressing our housing challenges, requires leadership that is rooted in compassion, community, and a deep commitment to our land and people," said Kamekona. "I am stepping forward to be that leader. Together, we can navigate the path of recovery and create a sustainable future for our Maui community."

Aunty Carol Lee stands as a guardian for the future, championing Aloha ʻAina in every policy, initiative, and community effort. “Our responsibility goes beyond the challenges we face in the present moment. It's about honoring our ancestors by creating a Maui that is safe and healthy for our keiki, and that our children's moʻopuna, will inherit with pride,” Kamekona shares. “This campaign is our collective commitment to a future where every decision is made with the well-being of our future seven generations in mind.”

With a vision that transcends immediate challenges, the campaign is set to outline comprehensive plans focused on fire recovery efforts, environmental stewardship, sustainable housing solutions, economic revitalization strategies, and fostering a culture of care that includes all residents of Maui. 

Her first Meet and Greet is planned for Saturday, February 24, 2024, from 10:00 am to 11:30 am in the public Food Court area in Queen Kaʻahumanu Center. Throughout Aunty Carol Lee’s campaign, all events and policy discussions will be open for community input to ensure that the voice of every resident is heard and valued.
